Online Quiz Competition on World Mental Health Day

To mark World Mental Health Day, the Counselling Cell of VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, organized an Online Quiz Competition from 10th to 13th October 2024. The quiz conducted via Google Forms, aimed to raise awareness among students about mental health and emphasize the importance of their own well-being and that of others.

The competition received participation from 42 students (16 male, 26 female) from different academic programmes. Participants were evaluated based on their responses, and the following students were recognized for their excellent performance:

1st Place: Ronal Barbosa (TY BCA, Div A)

2nd Place: Bushra Mohammad Khan (MCom, Part-I)

All participants were awarded E-certificates for their participation in the online quiz competition.

Expected Outcome of the Activity

The objective of the quiz was to educate participants on mental health topics, helping them recognize early signs and symptoms of mental health issues, understand coping mechanisms, and encourage a culture of open dialogue on mental well-being.

INSPIRUS 8

The Students Council of Computer Engineering (C-Codes) in association with the Computer Department of Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda – Goa organized its 8th edition of two days technical event – “INSPIRUS” on 10th and 11th October 2024. Various events such as ExQuizite (technical quiz), Hackathon (Inspirathon), TechnoMorph, Code Clash (Coding), Framed (photography) etc. were planned for this edition of INSPIRUS. As a major highlight of INSPIRUS, an INSPIRATHON (24 hours Hackathon) from 10th October 2024 (10.00 am) to 11th October 2024 (10.00 am) was also organized.

Besides the competitions, 2 workshops on titled “Building India’s Future – Shaping the Future in our Classrooms” and “Bridging Education and Innovation – The Value of Technical Education” were scheduled during INSPIRUS on 11th October 2024 from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon in the College Seminar Hall II.

Overall, the event contributed to students’ development, enhancing both technical expertise and soft skills such as time management, creativity, and critical thinking.

Peer-to-peer Learning in Financial Accounting

In an effort to promote active learning and improve students’ understanding of Financial Accounting, a peer-to-peer learning initiative was undertaken by 2 dedicated students, Almas Khan and Sudeep Dharwadkar from FY BCom, Div D, who volunteered to conduct supplementary sessions for their peers facing difficulties with the subject. These sessions took place on the 8th, 15th 19th and 22nd October 2024, in Classroom No. 212 during class hours when no other lectures were scheduled, ensuring that students could fully focus on reinforcing their knowledge. Almas conducted seven sessions, assisting five students, while Sudeep led four sessions, helping four students. Each session covered key Financial Accounting concepts and was tailored to address the specific challenges faced by their 9 classmates (4 males, 5 females).

Expected Outcome of the Activity:

Students who participated in the sessions are expected to gain a deeper understanding of the Financial Accounting concepts.  By actively engaging with their peers, students taking sessions will develop confidence in their ability to apply accounting knowledge to real-world scenarios.  The initiative will promote and a supportive learning environment among students.

Elocution Competition

The Reader’s Club of VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, organized an engaging Elocution Competition, focusing on contemporary issues that resonate with the students. The event held on 09th October 2024, commenced at 12:45 PM in Classroom F-104, with a warm welcome by Asst. Prof. Ciana Fernandes, in-charge of the Reader’s Club, to the esteemed judges, Asst. Prof. Zakiya Tahir and Asst. Prof. Pressy Pereira, along with participating students and the audience.

Each of the 09 participants (05 male, 04 female) presented their viewpoints with clarity, showcasing both in-depth research and effective public speaking skills. The judges provided constructive feedback, applauding the participants for their thought-provoking presentations and encouraging them to continue honing their skills.

The winners of the competition were announced:

This competition was a valuable opportunity for students to develop critical thinking and public speaking skills while engaging in meaningful discussions. It also fostered a sense of intellectual curiosity, encouraging students to explore important contemporary issues with confidence and clarity.

Expected Outcome of the Activity:

The competition provided students with the opportunity to improve their public speaking skills, such as clarity, pronunciation, and tone, fostering the ability to express ideas clearly and confidently. Speaking in front of an audience also helped participants build self-esteem and reduce stage fright, contributing to their personal growth and communication skills.

Guest Lecture on Navigating the Basics: An Introduction to Ind AS & IFRS

On 09th October 2024, the Department of Commerce & Management organised a guest lecture titled “Navigating the Basics: An Introduction to Ind AS & IFRS” for 44 students (26 male, 18 female) of FY BCom, Div A, in Classroom 215. Led by CA Saiprabha Kamath, an accounting standards expert with nearly a decade of experience in the field, the session aimed to provide foundational knowledge about Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

CA Saiprabha Kamath began with an engaging introduction, emphasizing the significance of accounting standards in maintaining transparency and consistency in financial reporting. She briefly highlighted the historical development of Ind AS and IFRS, contextualizing it with a glance at Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) followed in India. Key highlights included an overview of Ind AS and IFRS frameworks, focusing on their objectives, scope, and guiding principles. Significant differences, such as those related to revenue recognition, asset and liability measurement, and disclosure requirements, were discussed, along with practical implications using real-world examples to show how companies leverage these standards to enhance financial statement reliability.

The interactive Q&A segment encouraged students to engage with the material actively. Many students posed insightful questions, leading to vibrant discussions This engagement fostered a deeper understanding of the subject matter and stimulated critical thinking. Overall, the lecture was a valuable addition to the students’ academic experience, providing them with essential knowledge that will serve as a strong foundation for their future studies in financial accounting.

The lecture concluded with a gesture of appreciation for CA Saiprabha Kamath, who was presented with a potted plant. The vote of thanks was proposed by Assistant Professor Kalpana Parab, expressing gratitude for the valuable insights shared and the clarity of the presentation.

‘Stepping into the Spotlight: A Workshop on Compering and Anchoring’

The Department of Management, in collaboration with the Career, Training, Internship, and Placement (CTIP) Cell of the college organized a workshop titled “Stepping into the Spotlight: A Workshop on Compering and Anchoring”. This event took place on 7th October 2024 at 11:45 am in Hall No. 2, with Emcee Shailesh Rajput as the resource person. The workshop was designed to provide students with practical insights into the art of compering and effective public speaking.

A total of 64 students (35 male, 29 female) from various departments participated, eager to improve their skills in compering, anchoring, and event management. Mr. Rajput, a seasoned professional, shared his personal journey and expertise, offering valuable tips on voice modulation, stage presence, audience engagement, and confidence-building. Through interactive exercises and real-life examples, he helped students understand the nuances of successful event hosting.

The workshop concluded with a question-and-answer session, allowing students to gain clarity on their doubts and concerns regarding compering. The workshop was an enriching experience, providing students with practical skills beneficial in both academic and professional settings. The session was coordinated by Asst. Prof. Zakiya Tahir, and the event was compered by Miss Saffa Sayed, a student from FY BBA(FS).

Expected Outcome of the Activity: 

The workshop equipped students with essential compering skills, including public speaking, audience engagement, stage presence, and confidence-building. These skills enhance employability, prepare students for event management, compering and anchoring roles, and boost overall career readiness.

Outreach Activity on 2D Animation Workshop

The Department of Computer Science, under the TechTrendz Club of VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, organized a 2D Animation Workshop as an Outreach Activity on 5th October 2024 in the Smart Classroom, from 12:30 to 2:30 PM. Led by Assistant Professor Ankita Naik and organized by faculty members Ms. Sneha Prabhudessai, Ms. Girija Gaonkar, and Ms. Deepti Kulkarni, the workshop aimed to introduce higher secondary students to the fundamentals of 2D animation. The workshop featured an engaging presentation and a hands-on session, allowing participants to explore the basics of animation through sketching and animating images.

Expected Outcome of the Activity:

The primary objectives of this activity were to enhance students’ knowledge about 2D animation and to demonstrate the use of animation software tools for creating animations. The interactive, hands-on session allowed students to directly engage with the material, making the experience both enjoyable and educational. Through this outreach, the activity empowered participants with foundational skills and knowledge, fostering their interest in animation design and development.

Environmental Studies Field Trip to Salaulim Dam

On 5th October 2024, the FY BBA students from the college visited the Salaulim Dam and Botanical Gardens in Sanguem as part of their Environmental Studies-1 course. The objective of this field trip was to study the ecological significance of various plant species and to understand the principles of water conservation. A total of 40 students (20 male, 20 female) were accompanied by faculty members Dr. Mamata Kane and Dr. Nikita Verekar, who provided guidance throughout the visit, helping students identify important plant species and explaining the dam’s role in water conservation and resource management.

Expected Outcome of the Activity:

Students will have to prepare a report based on their observation during the field trip. This will be considered as an intra semester assessment, and students will be evaluated accordingly. The purpose of this assignment is to highlight the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable use of resources.

Guest Lecture on “Hindi Bhasha Ka Udbhav Evam Mahattv”

On 4th October 2024, the Department of Hindi of VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics organized a guest lecture on the topic “Hindi Bhasha Ka Udbhav Evam Mahattv” in classroom 205 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. A total of 89 (46 male, 42 female) students SY B.Com sections A, B, C, D, and E attended the session, which aimed to deepen students’ understanding and appreciation of the Hindi language.

The lecture featured Dr. Omprakash Tripathi, retired Head of the Department of Hindi at Parvatibai Chowgule College (Autonomous), Margao, who was introduced by SY B.Com student Roshani Marathi. Dr. Tripathi began his lecture by discussing the origin and development of the Hindi language, its various dialects, and its significance in contemporary society.

The lecture achieved its objective as students left motivated to deepen their knowledge of Hindi. Dinesh Kumar from SY B.Com expressed gratitude in a vote of thanks, while Mr. Shehbaaz Sayed from the same class compered the event. The guest lecture was successfully coordinated under the guidance of Assistant Professor Ms. Chaya Velip from the Department of Hindi.

Expected Outcome of the Activity

The lecture aimed to enhance students’ understanding of Hindi’s origin, dialects, and contemporary relevance, fostering greater appreciation for the language and motivating them to further deepen their knowledge.

My Story: Academic Foundations to Corporate Heights: Bridging the Gap from Class to Boardroom

On 4th October 2024, the Department of Computer Science in association with Career Training Internship Placement (CTIP) Cell and Institution’s Innovative Council (IIC) Cell of VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics organized an insightful session titled “My Story: Academic Foundations to Corporate Heights: Bridging the Gap from Class to Boardroom” aimed to provide students with practical insights into the journey from academia to the corporate world. The session was held in Hall 1 between 12:30 to 2:00 pm. The speaker for the event was Mr. Mangirish Salelkar, CEO of Umang Group, Chairman of Assocham Goa, and a key figure in the formation of the Goa Technology Association (GTA).

Mr. Salelkar shared his inspiring journey, transitioning from a self-proclaimed “lazy last-bench engineering student” to becoming a successful CEO. His story illustrated how persistence, the right mindset, and continuous self-improvement can lead to corporate heights, regardless of early academic struggles.

He emphasized three key pillars essential for success in the IT industry:

Attitude: A positive mindset, willingness to learn, and adaptability are crucial.
Deliverables: Consistently meeting expectations and delivering quality work are essential in any professional field.
Skills:Constant upskilling and staying updated with the latest technology trends can make one indispensable in the ever-evolving IT landscape.

An interactive Q&A session followed, where students posed questions related to Goa’s IT ecosystem, exploring its challenges, opportunities, and potential for growth. Mr. Salelkar, with his deep involvement in the Tech scene in Goa, provided valuable perspectives and encouraged students to be part in strengthening Goa’s IT sector.

Ankita Mishra hosted the session, which was attended by 107 (58 male, 49 female) students and 5 faculty members. Feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive.

Expected Outcome of the Activity: 

The expected outcomes of this activity are designed to inspire, educate, and empower students for successful careers in the IT industry. First, it aims to instill inspiration and motivation by showcasing Mangirish Salelkar’s journey of overcoming challenges to achieve success. His story is intended to inspire confidence among students, encouraging them to believe that success is achievable regardless of academic performance if they adopt a positive attitude, determination, and commitment to self-improvement. Additionally, the session will emphasize the importance of three key pillars for success: Attitude, Deliverables, and Skills. By understanding these pillars, students will appreciate the significance of a positive mindset, adaptability, consistency in work, and continuous skill development to stay relevant in the industry.

The activity also aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and corporate expectations, providing students with insights into the practical applications of their education, the critical role of soft skills, and strategies for professional success. Furthermore, through an interactive Q&A session, students will gain exposure to Goa’s IT ecosystem, which will deepen their awareness of the opportunities and challenges within the local industry. This could spark interest in contributing to Goa’s tech sector, whether through entrepreneurial endeavours or professional roles.

Another important outcome of the session is to facilitate networking and career guidance, offering students the opportunity to connect with an influential industry leader like Mr. Salelkar. This interaction is expected to provide valuable insights into the skills needed to thrive in the corporate world, helping students to gain clarity on their career paths. Finally, Mr. Salelkar’s experience as CEO of Umang Group and his role in founding the Goa Technology Association is anticipated to foster an entrepreneurial spirit among students. His story may encourage some students to explore entrepreneurial ventures or leadership roles within the tech industry. Overall, these outcomes align with the goal of empowering students to bridge their academic foundations with corporate success and inspire them to contribute actively to Goa’s growing technology ecosystem.
