Annual Athletic Meet

VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics (SDCCE) hosted its Annual Athletic Meet on 8th February 2025, from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM at the Vidya Vikas Mandal Ground. Around 150 students participated in this event organized by the Department of Physical Education and Sports, and was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Shri Vikram Verlekar, Chairman of the Sports Governing Council, Vidya Vikas Mandal. Officiating Principal Prof. Sanjay P. Sawant Desai welcomed the esteemed Chief Guest with a potted plant as a token of appreciation.

Following the welcome, Shri Vikram Verlekar unfurled the college flag, marking the commencement of the event. This was followed by a programme-wise march past, showcasing the discipline and spirit of the participants. After the march past, the Chief Guest lit the ceremonial torch and handed it over to an outstanding sportsperson of the college, who led the torch relay, symbolizing the start of the athletic competitions.

College Director of Physical Education & Sports, Dr. Ajinkya Kudtarkar, introduced the esteemed Chief Guest. In his inspiring speech, the Chief Guest emphasized the value of participation over victory, setting a positive tone for the day. The inaugural vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Saurabh Raikar, Instructor in Physical Education.

The sports day featured a variety of track and field events, including:

Track Events: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, and 5000m races (Men & Women)
Field Events: Long Jump, Shot Put, Discus Throw, Javelin Throw
Relay Events: 4x100m relay (Men & Women), Mixed 4x100m relay

Each student was limited to participating in two individual events and two relay events.

The Department also organized a 100-meter race and a Tug of War event for both male and female staff members of SDCCE. These activities fostered camaraderie and engagement among faculty members.

Prizes were awarded to the winners by the Officiating Principal, Vice Principal, Sports Director, and Physical Education Instructor. The ceremony concluded with the lowering of the college flag by Dr. Ajinkya Kudtarkar and Mr. Saurabh Raikar, who then handed it over to the Officiating Principal. The event concluded with the National Anthem, bringing a patriotic end to a day filled with enthusiasm and sportsmanship. The organizers expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Principal, Vice Principal, and all faculty members for their support and encouragement, which ensured the smooth execution and success of the Annual Athletic Meet 2025.

Expected Outcomes of the Activity

The Annual Athletic Meet aimed to instill values of sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, and perseverance among students while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. Through participation in various track and field events, students had the opportunity to enhance their physical fitness and develop their athletic skills. Guest Lecture on Forensic Accounting: Uncovering Financial Fraud

The Department of Commerce & Management at Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, Margao-Goa, organized a guest lecture on “Forensic Accounting: Uncovering Financial Fraud” on 6th February 2025 from 11.00 AM to 12.00 Noon in Classroom No. 206. The session aimed to enhance students’ knowledge of forensic accounting, its role in fraud detection, and its relevance in today’s financial world.

The session was conducted by CA Udhesh Verenker, Proprietor at Udhesh V & Associates Chartered Accountant. With vast experience in forensic accounting and auditing, CA Verenker provided insightful perspectives on detecting and preventing financial fraud. He explained the concept of forensic accounting, emphasizing its significance in corporate governance, financial fraud investigations, and legal proceedings. Various types of financial frauds were discussed, including embezzlement, money laundering, asset misappropriation, and fraudulent financial reporting. Real-world case studies were presented to help students understand practical applications of forensic accounting techniques.

The lecture also covers investigative methods such as digital forensic analysis, financial statement scrutiny, and fraud risk assessment. A discussion on the career opportunities in forensic accounting for commerce and finance students was also shared. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, where students sought clarity on the evolving role of forensic accountants in the corporate world. CA Verenker addressed queries regarding the skills required, certifications, and legal aspects of forensic accounting.

The guest lecture was highly informative and provided the students with a comprehensive understanding of forensic accounting and fraud detection. The session successfully bridged the gap between theoretical concepts and practical applications, making it a valuable learning experience. Around 66 students (31 males, 35 females) from SY B.Com attended the session. The session was organised by Asst. Prof. Pooja Shanbhag and Asst. Prof. Prashanti Bhamaikar, Faculty from B.Com Programme.

Expected Outcomes of the Activity

After attending this session, students will gain knowledge on forensic accounting, its role in fraud detection, and its application in financial investigations. They will learn about investigative methods such as digital forensic analysis, financial statement scrutiny, and fraud risk assessment. Additionally, students will be able to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios by developing problem-solving skills through analyzing real-world case studies discussed during the session. Furthermore, they will understand the required skills, certifications, and career pathways in the field of forensic accounting and fraud examination.

Session on “Sustainable Development with Seaweed Biorefinery”

As part of the 4th Edition of Vidnyan Dhara 2025, VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, in collaboration with the Government of Goa, Goa State Higher Education Council, and the Directorate of Higher Education, organized a session on “Sustainable Development with Seaweed Biorefinery” on 17th February 2025 at 12.45 PM in Hall No.2, 5th Floor of the college building. A total of 114 students (60 males, 54 females), along with faculty members, attended the session.

The event commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Subrahmanya Bhat, followed by Asst. Prof. Akshada Gaonkar introducing the resource person, Dr. Meghanath Prabhu, Assistant Professor and Programme Director of Biotechnology at Goa University.

Dr. Prabhu’s session began with fundamental science concepts, providing an overview of algae, their anatomy, and classification, laying the foundation for a deeper understanding of seaweed’s role in sustainable development. He emphasized how students could venture into low-investment businesses using seaweed and highlighted seaweed’s potential applications in various industries, including:

Textiles & Packaging– As an alternative clothing material and eco-friendly food packaging.
Nutrition & Health– A rich source of essential nutrients, micronutrients, and hydro-nutrients.
Beauty & Skincare– Used in oil control gels and cosmetic products.
Agriculture & Pharmaceuticals– Incorporated into fertilizers and medicinal formulations.

He also elaborated on biorefineries, their role in biomass processing, and the economic benefits of aquaculture and seaweed farming, particularly for rural communities. He emphasized government initiatives like the Blue Economy that promote seaweed cultivation as a sustainable livelihood option. While seaweed farming remains an emerging industry in India, Dr. Prabhu noted the current low competition and the sourcing of raw materials from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat for seaweed biorefineries.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, allowing students to engage with Dr. Prabhu. Miss Abigayle Fernandes from TY B.Com delivered the vote of thanks. The session was coordinated by Assistant Professor Akshada Gaonkar.

Expected Outcomes of the Activity

The session increased students’ awareness of seaweed’s potential in industries like textiles, food, cosmetics, and agriculture. It highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of seaweed biorefinery and government initiatives like the Blue Economy. By bridging theory with real-world applications, the session encouraged students to explore sustainable innovations and entrepreneurial opportunities in biotechnology.

Session on “Government Schemes for Agripreneurship”

The Department of Economics and Banking and the Department of Commerce and Management of Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics, Margao, Goa, organized an informative session on “Government Schemes for Agripreneurship” on 5th February 2025 at 11:30 AM in ClassroomNo. 215.

The session was conducted for students enrolled in the Agripreneurship course and was led by Ms. Roma Shet Shirodkar, Assistant Agriculture Officer, Agriculture Office, Margao, Goa. The resource person provided valuable insights into various government initiatives aimed at promoting agripreneurship. She elaborated on financial assistance schemes, training programs, subsidies, and other incentives available for aspiring agripreneurs. Students were guided on the application procedures for these benefits and were encouraged to explore agriculture-based entrepreneurial ventures.

The session was interactive, with students engaging in discussions and seeking clarifications on different aspects of agribusiness. Practical examples and success stories were shared to illustrate the impact of government support on the agricultural sector.

The session was successfully coordinated by Asst. Prof. Sheryl Sanches and Asst. Prof. Puja Gaonkar, ensuring its smooth execution. Overall, the session provided a comprehensive understanding of agripreneurial opportunities and inspired students to consider agriculture as a viable business avenue. A total of 65 students (22 males, 28 females) attended the session.

Expected Outcomes of the Activity

The session enabled students to gain insights into various government schemes and subsidies available for agripreneurs, including financial assistance, training programs, and support mechanisms. It provided clarity on the eligibility criteria, documentation requirements, and step-by-step processes to avail government support for agricultural entrepreneurship. Real-life examples and case studies shared by the resource person helped students understand how agripreneurs can leverage these schemes for business growth. Additionally, the session motivated students to explore agriculture-based entrepreneurial opportunities, fostering self-employment and rural development. Furthermore, students had the opportunity to interact with an industry expert, allowing them to seek guidance for future agribusiness ventures.

Two days National Level Workshop on “Youth Exploring Gender Equality”

Fr. Agnel College of Arts & Commerce, Pilar, organized a Two-Day National Level Workshop on “Youth Exploring Gender Equality” on 4th and 5th February 2025 from 10.00 AM to 4.00 PM at Pilar Pilgrim Centre. Representing the Women’s Cell of VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics, Margao, three M.Com Part II students, namely, Mr. Alrich Raniel Fernandes, Mr. Ivon Nazario Fernandes and Mr. Shriyank Raikar participated in the workshop.

Day 1: Sessions & Key Highlights

The first day began with registration, followed by an inaugural function to officially commence the workshop. Students from the Political Science Department presented a mime on gender equality, creatively highlighting the theme.

The keynote address, titled “Bringing the Scales on Par,” was delivered by Prof. N. Murugeswari, Director & Head of the Department of Women’s Studies, Bharathidasan University, Tamil Nadu. She discussed systemic and societal factors contributing to gender inequality and explored potential solutions.

The next session, “Rethinking Gender Justice,” was led by Adv. Albertina Almeida, a lawyer and human rights activist from Goa. She delved into legal frameworks and challenges in achieving gender justice. Dr. Ranjana Ferrao, Associate Professor, V.M. Salgaocar College of Law, Miramar, Goa, conducted an insightful session on the “Purple Campaign for Gender Equality,” shedding light on its history, significance, and impact of the Purple Campaign in advocating for gender rights.

Participants were provided with tea breaks and lunch, ensuring a comfortable learning environment. Despite minor delays, the day successfully provided a comprehensive overview of gender equality issues through expert insights.

Day 2: Focus on the Purple Campaign

The second day centered around the “Purple Campaign for Gender Equality,” featuring sessions by:

All three speakers are associated with the Women’s Studies Programme at the D.D. Kosambi School of Social Sciences and Behavioural Studies, Goa University. Their sessions provided an in-depth understanding of the campaign’s strategies, objectives, and achievements.

The workshop concluded with a valedictory session after lunch, summarizing key takeaways, reflections, and discussions from the event. Participants were again provided with refreshments and meals, maintaining an interactive and engaging environment throughout.

The workshop provided valuable insights into the importance of gender equality, fostered awareness, critical thinking, and a sense of responsibility among participants, inspiring them to take meaningful steps toward gender justice. The diverse range of speakers and topics provided a well-rounded exploration of the subject, covering legal, social, and activist perspectives.

The workshop provided valuable insights into the importance of gender equality and ways to actively promote it. Students learned about various campaigns and initiatives advocating for equality. Field Trip to Manohar Parrikar Solid Waste Management Facility

The Department of Management Studies organized a field trip for FY BBA(FS) students to the Manohar Parrikar Solid Waste Management Facility at Cacora on 4th February 2025 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Upon arrival, the students were welcomed by Mr. Kiran Burud and Mr. Gouresh Sawant Talauliker, Engineers at the facility. He provided an in-depth explanation of the operations at the wet and dry waste management plant, including the plant’s process and functionality. A short video was shown to give the students a clear understanding of the plant’s operations.

The facility has an installed capacity to treat 100 tonnes of waste per day, comprising 60 tonnes of dry waste and 40 tonnes of wet waste. The facility targets waste collection and segregation from four talukas—Sanguem, Quepem, Darbandora, and Canacona. From the wet fraction of waste, biogas is produced, which is converted into electricity, while the stabilized organic sludge is processed into high-quality soil conditioners and compost. The dry waste is cleaned and transformed into high-quality Refused Derived Fuel (RDF).

A total of 36 students (26 males, 10 females) participated, accompanied by Assistant Professors Dr. Nikita Verenkar and Mr. Sarth Shanbhag.

Expected Outcomes of the Activity

The field trip enhanced the students’ understanding of the workings of a waste management plant, covering key processes and stages involved. Students learned about the significance of proper waste management for public health and environmental protection. Additionally, they gained insights into the transformation of waste into reusable resources, such as compost and electricity. The visit also highlighted the importance of community involvement in maintaining sustainable waste management systems.

Volleyball Intramural (Men)

The Department of Physical Education and Sports successfully organized the Volleyball Intramural for Men on 3rd and 4th February 2025 from 2:00 PM onwards, at Vidya Vikas Mandal Volleyball Court. A total of 12 teams participated in the tournament, showcasing their talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

The matches followed a knockout format, with fixtures drawn through lots. All preliminary matches were played as a single-set match of 21 points, while the finals followed a best-of-three format, played to 15 points per set.

The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Mr. Ved Prabhu Desai, the Sports General Secretary of the college. The tournament successfully fostered a spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork among students, making it an engaging and competitive sporting event.

Crossword Craze

The TechTrendz Club of the Department of Computer Science demonstrated its commitment to student development by hosting “Crossword Craze” on February 1st, 2025. The event, held in Lab 1 from 12:45 PM onwards, attracted 20 participants (08 males, 12 females) from the BCA and BVoc.(ST) programmes. Students enthusiastically showcased their IT knowledge, teamwork, and analytical skills in this challenging crossword competition.

Career Guidance Program for MBA Aspirants

The Career, Training, Internship and Placement (CTIP) Cell of the college organized a Career Guidance Program on 3rd February 2025 in Hall 2 from 11.30 AM onwards, for undergraduate students across the programmes aspiring to pursue an MBA. The session was led by Dr. M. Prabhakaran, Head of the Department of Management Studies, Agnel Institute of Technology and Design (AITD). The session aimed to provide insights into career growth opportunities, higher education options, professional certifications, and MBA prospects.

Dr. Prabhakaran began the session by discussing managerial career growth and the essential skills required to succeed as a manager and different career paths after graduation. He elaborated on various postgraduate study options, including:

M.Com and MBA for higher education
Professional certifications such as CA, CS, CMA
Entrepreneurial opportunities like CFA and Mutual Fund Distribution

A detailed overview of the MBA programme was presented, covering specializations in Marketing, Human Resource Management, Finance, Operations, and Business Analytics. Dr. Prabhakaran emphasized the importance of choosing the right specialization based on individual career goals. Additionally, the session covered MBA entrance exam preparation strategies, focusing on CMAT and ATMA. He provided valuable insights into exam structure and syllabus, effective preparation techniques and tips for achieving high scores. Students were also introduced to the MBA program at AITD, gaining insights into the learning environment, facilities, and academic offerings.

The session was highly interactive and engaging, allowing students to clarify doubts and explore career planning strategies. Participants found the session informative and beneficial in shaping their future academic and professional paths. A total of 83 students (46 males, 37 females) participated in the session.

Expected Outcomes of the Activity 

The students gained clarity on various career paths after graduation, including higher studies, professional certifications, and entrepreneurial ventures. Additionally, the students became aware of different MBA specializations (Marketing, HR, Finance, Operations, Business Analytics) and their relevance to industry demands.

Parikrama 0.7- The Conclave: Celebrate ideas event

VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics actively participated in “Parikrama 0.7 – The Conclave: Celebrate Ideas”, a prestigious event organized by Parikrama Knowledge Terminus (PKT) at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, on 1st and 2nd February 2025 from 8:00 AM onwards. This platform brought together students from various disciplines to showcase their talents, engage in innovative competitions, and contribute to the exchange of ideas. A total of 40 students from the college, including two alumni and Assistant Professor Ramkrishna Reddy, participated in the event.

The college’s participation was met with remarkable success, as the students secured second place in two key competitions. In the Campaign Art Competition, the team comprising Mr. Shreyesh Naik, Miss Mitali Chari, Miss Pranesh Pirolkar, Miss Devanshi Kanekar, Mr. Nirbhay Dessai, and Miss Mrunali Chari demonstrated exceptional creativity and teamwork, earning them the second position. Additionally, in Base Lagoryo Competition, a dynamic sports event, Mr. Shashank Parab and Mr. Dishant Naik showcased outstanding athleticism and coordination to secure the second-place position. These achievements reflect the college’s commitment to excellence in both the arts and sports.

The event featured a diverse range of competitions across multiple disciplines. Notable events included Fashion Folga, Folk Fitness, Kant Akant, Shark Tank Goa, Rock Parliament, Reelz Campaign Art, Game Rough, Box Theatre, and various sports such as Base Lagoryo, Bow & Baan, Maar Penalty, Tyre Relay, and Koyne Bails. These competitions provided students with opportunities to develop creativity, strategic thinking, and teamwork while broadening their skill sets and enhancing their personal growth. The student coordinators, Mr. Tanish Patil, Mr. Niraj Aroskar, and Mr. Harsh Naik, played a crucial role in ensuring smooth participation and coordination of the college team across all events. Their leadership and organizational skills contributed significantly to the team’s success. The event coordinators, Dr. Sheetal Arondekar, Asst. Prof. Akshada Gaonkar, and Asst. Prof. Girija Gaonkar, provided guidance and support throughout the event.
